Foods and Beverages That May Contain More Sugar Than You Think

Don’t be fooled by flavor, just because something does or doesn’t taste sweet, doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with the sugar content. While we all know the usual culprits of high sugar: candy bars, soda, ice cream, doughnuts, and cupcakes, etc. There are a wide variety of snacks and drinks that you may not be aware of. And the sugar can add up pretty quickly.

Here are a few of the sneaky sources:

  • Instant oatmeal
  • Yogurt
  • Tomato sauce
  • Apple sauce
  • Juice
  • Low fat options
  • Condiments
  • Specialty coffees (frappuccinos, lattes etc.)
  • Sweetened Ice tea
  • Jams and jellies
  • Canned fruit
  • Muffins
  • Frozen dinners
  • Coleslaw
  • Flavored yogurt
  • Sports drinks
  • Granola
  • Protein bars
  • Milk

Although, some of these could have lower sugar options, you’ll have to read the label to be sure. If there isn’t a label, go to Google or use a nutrition/fitness app because your taste buds aren’t going to be completely reliable. Who would think tomato sauce, with its savory flavor, would be high in sugar? And on the flip side, did you know that most store bought whipped cream and whipped topping is low in sugar? When it comes down to it, the only way to truly know what’s in your food is to do a little research.
